The sofa - our family island...

Our sofa, much like all families, is our island.  Our place to sit together, to hug, relax and be.  There we tell stories, admit secrets, play lego, recuperate from illnesses, snuggle with popcorn, work, and be still.  The sofa can be a boat sailing on the seven seas, a plane, a hideout from zombies.  A place to rest after a hard day, to watch movies and sleep.

The sofa takes a battering, daily.  Spills are mopped, toast crumbs swept, and cushions plumped.  Our sofa is old.  We got it 5 years ago, a lucky freecycle find.  Originally from Ikea it fits our home, just. (I won't go into the details of half the door frame coming out to fit it into the lounge!).  As much as I love it, I think it's time to upgrade.  To something a little more stylish.  The boys are getting older and hopefully more responsible in their actions (although I do find my cushions chewed and thrown on the floor daily!).

I've been looking around and came across Willow and Hall.   A small British company making beautiful sofas by hand.  I am thinking of getting one of their sofa beds, to encourage friends and relatives to visit more.  I particularly love the Elmley Sofa, the only problem is choosing the fabric.  I veer from grey linen to teal velvet and back again. It's a decision I cannot make!!

What do you think?  Linen or velvet? Help!

  1. I'd go linen every time - it's cooler and so hardy. x

  2. I'd agree with Bron Maxabella. When I was researching into our sofa I wanted a pink (yes, pink) velvet one but I read somewhere that they weren't practical (how I hate that word) if you were continually wiping marks off. So I'd go with the linen. Don't they do a teal linen one? xx

  3. Definitely linen as it's more durable. I am also about to upgrade as we have had our linen sofas for ten years! They are still perfect but as I get older I quite like the idea of relaxing on a corner sofa with recliners on the ends. Somehow I reckon the teens will get there first. Have a great week.

  4. Sounds great. I've always wanted to velvet sofa but when I mentioned it to a design savvy friend she screamed NOT VELVET! Darn it! Another plan thwarted. I've an old Habitat 3 seater and 2 seater which have been teenaged to death so I'm too thinking of buying. Looking forward to finding out how you get on. Elinor x

  5. With boys in the house you will definitely need covers that can be removed and washed! So I'm guessing linen would be the best choice.

  6. I am on a constant search for the perfect sofa. We have 3 kids, 2 dogs and lots of visitors so durability and washability are important but so is how it looks. I'd go linen, I am visualising ice cream on velvet, not good. Anyway, you'll make the right choice, I'm sure, happy shopping.

  7. Unforunately our brand new (gorgeous!) sofa won't fit in our new house. It makes me die a little inside. However, this means that we are on the hunt for a new one. So thank you very much for sharing this- DFS is quite literally my worst nightmare! xx

  8. Velvet sounds amazing and a luxury that I can never have with 6 dogs!
